Kennedy To Undergo Brain Surgery

LATEST: Ailing U.S. Senator TED KENNEDY is undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous brain tumour found by doctors last month (May08).

The 76-year-old politician - and last surviving brother of the late John F. Kennedy - will undergo the six-hour operation at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina on Monday morning (02Jun08).

In a statement released by his office, Democrat Kennedy says he and his wife Vicki had consulted with doctors and experts from across the United States before deciding on the procedure.

He is expected to remain in the hospital for a week to recuperate before beginning radiation treatment and a round of chemotherapy at Massachusetts General Hospital.

His statement reads: "I am deeply grateful to the people of Massachusetts and to my friends, colleagues and so many others across the country and around the world who have expressed their support and good wishes as I tackle this new and unexpected health challenge."

Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant glioma, an especially lethal type of brain tumour, following a seizure last month (May08).

He adds: "After completing treatment, I look forward to returning to the United States Senate and to doing everything I can to help elect (Democrat candidate) Barack Obama as our next president."
